Do you need to kick some bad habits in the butt?

I certainly do! Welcome everyone to my very first blog post! My name is Monica and I have more than a few bad habits that I want to change! Lets see, I’m overweight so I need to lose a few pounds. I do exercise, but only walking as I have a dog, so I need to tone up some muscles. I need to stop stressing so much as it is making me ill. I feel overwhelmed all the time as I am bad at organising my time. The list goes on and on! What I have done is to make a list of all the bad habits I have and then prioritize them as to the habits that are making my life bad at the moment. This way I know which habits I need to start changing as soon as possible.

How long does it take to change a bad habit?

It is different for all people and it depends on the type of habit you are trying to change. For example, I tried several times to stop smoking. It was extremely difficult as it had become an addiction and I had to put measures in place to be able to stop, permanently! In contrast, say you want to be able to make your mornings easier as they are always hectic, then this is a process of putting measures in place to make your life easier. If you read books on the topic you will find that the general consensus is it takes 21 days to change a habit and for it to become part of your routine.

How can I make sure I stay on track?

I have devised some charts which are free to download and you can use these to monitor your progress. I would also consider using a diary or journal to write down how you feel about changing your bad habit and what you will gain from changing. It’s really about finding out your WHY. Why do you want to change? What will improve by changing this habit? Make sure it’s your WHY and not someone else who is telling you to change.
